How To Clean A Greasy Kitchen: The 4 Best Products

Greasy kitchens can be the most daunting thing to clean in a home. It’s not as simple as vacuuming or wiping up dirt. You need a degreasing product, patience, a scrub brush, and sometimes a whole lot of elbow grease. Let’s break down the best products to clean up grease in your kitchen.

When you are cleaning grease, it feels tacky and your cloth doesn’t glide. Use one of the following products to cut the grease until all stickiness is gone. Remember, products need time to do their work, and the grime comes off in layers. So you may need to repeat the process a few times. Once all the grease is removed, rinse with a clean wet cloth (use hot water), then polish using a carbon cloth (USA) (Canada), Windex® (USA) (Canada), or Weiman’s® Stainless Steel Polish (USA) (Canada) depending on the material the item is made of.

Pro tip: Always read your labels and test your products first in an inconspicuous spot to make sure they won’t damage the material.

Mr.Clean®

We usually use Mr.Clean® Summer Citrus (USA) (Canada) undiluted, in a spray bottle. We also love Mr.Clean® Clean Freak (USA) (Canada). They are great degreasers, but you need to be mindful of your surfaces as they can cause damage to materials like painted cabinets or marble. Mr.Clean® can streak, so be sure to wipe to rinse with a clean damp cloth after you get rid of the grease.

Best for:

Dawn® Powerwash

Dawn® Powerwash (USA) (Canada) is slightly more gentle than Mr.Clean®, so you can use it anywhere we’ve listed Mr. Clean® if there’s not much grease built up. Dawn® Powerwash is also food safe, so we like to use it on surfaces that come into contact with food.

Best for:

Blue Dawn® Dish Soap

Blue Dawn® dish soap (USA) (Canada) is the most gentle and food safe option for cutting grease. Fill up your sink with hot water and a squeeze of Dawn® dish soap, and go to town.

Best for:

Cascade® Dishwasher Tabs

We like to use Cascade® Dishwasher tabs (USA) (Canada) in unconventional ways. Fill up a large tote bin with hot water, drop in 3 or 4 tabs, and then let your oven racks or stove grates soak. The grease and food melt right off and require less scrubbing. You can also use this mixture in a bath tub to dunk your greasy blinds in (use caution as too much water can cause them to swell).

Best for:

Tip: Use a splatter screen (USA) (Canada) on your frying pans and always run your ventilation fan when cooking to prevent greasy messes.

Grease can be a pain to deal with but like all things in your home, regular maintenance will save you from dealing with too much at once. To clean the rest of your kitchen, see this article.
